Friday 6th April 2001 – 8.47am
A fresh day, with wind from west-southwest, crisp but with no coldness to it. The boats are riding out the height of the tide right now, the force of water slowing itself and swirling in diagonal pulses of water up the Channel, the white boats reflecting the brightness of the sun which is going in and out of cloud over my right shoulder.
