The Channel is nearing the height of the tide, with patterns in the water subsiding and the boats coming round slightly to face the west wind. Overhead is a thick layer of fast moving grey cloud, but to sea is sun and brightness, and over near Black Combe the Whicham Valley has snatched a brief period of sunlight.
