Wednesday 19th September 2001 – 7.34am
The sun is only just rising, with orange cloud visible behind the Devonshire sheds. Ahead, the day is still coming out of the half-light: Black Combe is dark and flat and the boats are dulled and aground on the Channel floor. There is an occasional speck of rain in the air, brought in by the north-northwest wind I suppose. Otherwise the day is full of early bird calls and the sound of early traffic moving slowly over the bridge.
